Big Cities, Beautiful Towns
La Bomba is just a short drive away from some of France's most spectacular cities and some of its most charming market towns.
The house is almost exactly equidistant from Toulouse and Carcassonne.
The medieval walled city of Carcassonne is perhaps the best preserved in Europe and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its pristine condition is thanks to the vision of architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc who restored the city in the mid-19th century. It's about 45 mins drive from La Bomba and well worth seeing.
Toulouse (45 mins) is France's third biggest city and home to a myriad of attractions including superb shopping and excellent restaurants. At its heart is the Capitole (pictured), a beautiful square built in the trademark red brick. The university is world class but it's as the home of European space adventure that Toulouse is most famous. Do visit the fascinating La Cite de l'Espace.
La Bomba is within a 15 minute drive of each of these delightful Lauragais market towns:
Castel, as the locals call it, is most famous as the home of 'cassoulet' - the local speciality of confit of duck and haricot beans. The town is dominated by the Grand Bassin, the HQ of the Canal du Midi, where you can charter boats for the day.
Revel boasts a spectacular market square where you can stock up on the freshest local produce every Saturday morning. Michelin chef John Burton Race has described the market as amongst the finest in France. There is also a thriving arts and crafts scene and the town is home to a number of fine furniture makers.
Villefranche is west of La Bomba, on the way towards Toulouse and this is reflected in its distinctive red brick architecture. The town has a number of good restaurants and before dinner you could even join the locals in a game of petanque in the shady Place de la Pradelle.
